It is so notorious that Government officials can do no good in the eyes of the "Daily Press" that we have been led to look upon its articles with perfect indifference.
The report of the evidence at the Inquest is even garbled - for instance, when asked Dr. Freeland "whether if on making a post-mortem examination of a body he found the intestines quite healthy he would believe that the man could not have died from disease of the bowels," to which he replied "certainly not, unless I had examined the bowels with a microscope!" The "Daily Press" omits this in one issue and in another reports it as a certain scientific conversation having passed between us - whereas the question was put to show the value of the witness's testimony, he having sworn that Klofabla was suffering from disease of the bowels.
I have only to add in conclusion that the inquest on Klofabla was instituted at my urgent request, little dreaming that any blame could be imputed to my Department, from which I was well aware he had received the greatest care and kindness for months. I do not think that a want of humanity is a sin that...
